This past weekend Professor Yuri Simoes competed in the Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) 6, a submission only event. After winning his first match in overtime via rear naked choke, Yuri faced the fan favorite Garry Tonon. Garry was previously undefeated in EBI competition being crowned the EBI 1, EBI 3 and EBI 5 champion. After ten hard fought minutes no one was declared a winner. In overtime Yuri was able to escape quicker and was declared the winner!
In the semi finals Yuri faced Garry’s team mate and student Gordon Ryan. In regulation they both attacked and after ten minutes the match was declared a draw. In overtime Gordan was able to overcome Yuri’s submission attempt and was able to finish, Gordan would eventually go on to be crowned the EBI 6 champion.
Although the night didn’t go the way he wanted we are all very proud of professor Yuri. He showed tremendous heart and will be back stronger! A champion on and off the mat!
Thanks to everyone who helped him prepare, especially Professor Caio, who guided his training. Ken Primola who put in hours with Yuri working on his wrestling and who went down to help him warm up. Guga Campos who helped both in training and at the event as his second coach. Kim Terra, who cornered Yuri and has been by his side from day 1. Although we compete by ourselves it takes a team to make it happen. Success is not an accident by a result of the team working together.
Lastly thanks to everyone who supported, both at the event and watching all over the world. We are CTA!!
